What to Prepare Before Buying a Burmese Kitten
Before buying a Burmese kitten in Amsterdam, you need to prepare your home for its arrival. Plan where the kitten will eat, rest, and use the toilet.
Where to Place the Litter Box
Ask the breeder what type of litter box they used and purchase a similar one. This will help the kitten adapt more easily and prevent any toilet issues. Use the same type of litter the kitten is accustomed to, as changing it can disorient the animal.
Place the litter box in a quiet, low-traffic area where the pet can use it without being disturbed.
Where to Feed Your Burmese
The best place for feeding is in the kitchen. Set up a tray with two bowls: one for water and one for food.
Ensure there is always fresh water available and change it daily. Dry food can be kept in the bowl at all times, periodically adding fresh portions. Otherwise, the smell of the food may stop attracting the kitten.
Creating a Play and Rest Area
Burmese kittens are very active and playful. They love to frolic, play, and scratch. Set up a play area with a scratching post and a selection of toys.
To encourage the cat to use the scratching post, use an attractant spray. Choose high-quality toys without small parts, fluff, or feathers that can come off, as these will inevitably end up in the kitten’s mouth and could cause harm.
An excellent solution for rest is to buy a cat tree with a house for your Burmese cat. After active play, the pet can sleep inside. Line the interior with a soft blanket. A regular bed with a warm, cozy mattress will also work.
Care Supplies
Regular grooming requires:
- A brush and a piece of cloth to care for the coat
- Protein spray to nourish the hair, improve growth, and enhance appearance
- Shampoo – choose a gentle one with care ingredients
- A toothbrush and veterinary toothpaste – cats need daily tooth brushing
- Nail clippers to trim the claws as they grow
After bathing, the Burmese cat can be dried with a quiet hairdryer or simply wrapped in a terry towel.
What Not to Do as a Burmese Cat Owner
- Constantly cuddle and carry them around. Burmese cats love human attention but should also be independent. Let them explore the new place. They will come to you on their own.
- Scold, shout, or use violence. This will scare the animal and drive it away from you.
Most of the skills a Burmese kitten needs are taught at the cattery. Being close to their mother and interacting with other animals establishes a proper behavior model. Owners need to put in minimal effort for training. However, when the Burmese cat finds itself in a new environment, its training needs to be adjusted.
