How to Trim a Burmese Cat’s Claws
Burmese cats have a friendly and affectionate nature and generally do not like to extend their claws. However, regular claw trimming is essential. Why?
Overgrown claws can harm the pet: they can grow into the paw pads, causing discomfort and sometimes severe pain. If a Burmese cat gets caught on something, it can injure itself. Kittens are particularly prone to this.
The second reason is to protect your home. Burmese cats can scratch furniture and wallpaper.
Therefore, Burmese cats’ claws should be trimmed about 1-2 times a month using a special tool called a nail clipper.
How to Properly Trim Claws
Ordinary manicure scissors won’t work. A cat’s claw is dense and can split. A nail clipper should be a must-have in a Burmese cat owner’s home.
With a special tool in hand, follow these instructions:
- Ensure good lighting.
- Calm the cat. Choose a moment when the cat is happy and relaxed. Stay calm and do not shout to keep the cat at ease.
- Position the cat comfortably. Do it yourself or ask someone for help. This depends on the cat’s character, temperament, and attitude toward grooming procedures. If the cat struggles, wrap it gently in a blanket or towel.
- Gently press the paw pad to reveal the claw. Trim without touching the blood vessels (cut 2 mm away from the vessels). Repeat for each paw.
- If you accidentally cut a blood vessel, bleeding will occur. Use disinfectants such as chlorhexidine, hydrogen peroxide, or Miramistin. After disinfection, sprinkle the wound with food gelatin, cornstarch, or another styptic agent.
Types of Nail Clippers
The pet industry offers various tools for trimming Burmese cats’ claws.
- Compact nail clippers with handles like scissors. Convenient for Burmese kittens but not suitable for adult cats.
- Clippers (large nail clippers). A classic tool for adult pets. Choose one with a guard and silicone grips for safety during the procedure.
- Guillotine nail clippers. The claw is placed in a special cutting hole, and the handles are pressed. This provides a quick, clean cut. However, it has a drawback: you can’t quickly remove it from the claw, increasing the risk of injury. Suitable for calm Burmese cats.
- Grinder. A safe tool resembling an electric file. It comes with different attachments and speeds and is suitable for all pets.
