Dry Food for Burmese Cats: How to Choose?
Owners of Burmese cats often hear that to ensure a long and healthy life for their pets, they need to choose premium or super-premium class foods. These provide a complete and balanced diet.
While this is true, pet owners often rely solely on the “premium” labels on packaging. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean the food is of high quality. How can you determine if the food is suitable for the Burmese breed? Pay attention to the packaging.
What Should Quality Food for Burmese Cats Contain?
The ingredients list indicates the nutritional value of the product. Reputable manufacturers provide detailed information about the ratio and amount of protein, carbohydrates, and fiber.
A good food for Burmese cats should contain:
- Meat (not by-products): The type of meat should be specified, such as chicken or veal.
- Grains and vegetables: Their proportion should not exceed 50%, ideally 25-30%.
- Vitamins and minerals: These should be listed in detail on the packaging.
- Natural antioxidants: These preserve fats and include herbal oils and vitamins E and C.
If the primary ingredient is grain (e.g., wheat, corn) and the proportion of animal products is low, the food is essentially a porridge. This is unsuitable for feeding Burmese cats and can cause gastrointestinal diseases.
Important: Foods labeled “premium” without a detailed list of ingredients on the packaging are likely not truly premium.
What Should Not Be in the Food?
- By-products, such as ground beef skin: These are dubious sources of protein with no nutritional value.
- Chemical preservatives and colorants: Ethoxyquin, propyl gallate, and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) make the food look appealing and stay fresh longer, but their constant consumption has carcinogenic effects on the animal.
- Sugars and caramel: Added to improve taste, these are unnecessary in cat food and can lead to dental issues and pancreatitis in Burmese cats.
- Empty fillers (nut shells, cellulose): These indicate cost-cutting during production. They create a feeling of fullness but contain no beneficial nutrients.
Feeding Guidelines
High-quality food has lower feeding guidelines. Thus, a Burmese cat eats less but receives all necessary nutrients.
