Burmese Cat with Sable Coat
The “sable” color is the most common coat color for Burmese cats. This rich dark brown was the original standard for the breed, and it is from this color that all other variations have developed.
The introduction of other colors was made possible by a special gene belonging to the albino series. This gene dilutes black to brown and makes other colors paler. It also causes Burmese kittens to be born light-colored, developing their true color as they grow older.
Description of the Sable Coat
In heraldry, the sable color represents black and falls into the category of dark shades. Remarkably, this breed is unique in its rich brown color with exquisite highlights that cannot be found in any other breed.
The classic sable coat is characterized by a dark body, a slightly lighter belly, and nearly black ears and face. However, the sable Burmese cat exhibits a variety of shades. The coat can be:
- Night black with amber highlights
- Rich brown
- Dark chocolate
- Strong coffee
- Redwood
Despite these variations, a sable Burmese is never truly black. The fur resembles that of a sable animal: dense, with a bright shine, and very soft to the touch. In sunlight, it glows with golden highlights.
In the USA, this color is referred to as “seal sable.” It was first presented in 1938 by breeder Joseph Thompson.
The Sable Coat – The Most Popular
While rare colors are often prized in other cat breeds, the sable coat is the most popular and unique in Burmese cats, despite being the most common.
The main reason for this popularity is the luxurious appearance of the sable coat. It is rich and satin-like, gleaming in the light and catching the eyes of everyone around. The breed’s characteristic golden eyes look stunning against the dark, glossy fur.
Another reason for its popularity is that sable Burmese cats are incredibly photogenic. The dark fur with its glossy sheen looks captivating under studio lights.
