When to Breed a Burmese Cat

The first heat in a cat occurs around 6 months of age, indicating sexual maturity. However, breeding at such an early age is not recommended due to potential complications.

The optimal period for mating is at 1.5 years old, or during the third heat cycle.

Signs that your cat is ready include:

• Loud and prolonged meowing, making plaintive, calling sounds
• Becoming more affectionate and demanding attention
• Adopting a typical mating posture: arching the back, moving the paws, and flicking the tail
• Rubbing against surfaces in the house, spreading her scent
• Losing appetite

The heat cycle lasts about a week, so it’s better to find a suitable male cat in advance.

How to Prepare a Cat for Breeding

Here are a few simple rules to prepare your Burmese cat for breeding:

• Ensure vaccination is up to date.
• Test the cat for viral and chronic infections.
• Treat the cat for worms, fleas, and ticks two weeks before the expected mating.
• Trim the cat’s nails to avoid mutual injuries.
• Avoid bathing the cat before mating as it may wash away her specific scent.

How Breeding Occurs

We invite those interested in breeding their Burmese cats to our cattery at an affordable price. Mating takes place on the male cat’s territory. You bring your female cat to our cattery, where she stays for a few days. To minimize stress, bring along familiar items like her food bowl, litter box, food, and carrier.

We provide a separate, comfortable room with mats, beds, balanced quality food, and fresh water for the animals. The first day, the female cat explores the new environment, and mating occurs on the second day.

The partners are under our close supervision, and if necessary, we assist with the mating process.

Afterward, we offer detailed consultation during the pregnancy, birthing, and nursing period.

Pregnancy and Birth of a Burmese Cat

Burmese cats carry their kittens for 62-72 days. During pregnancy, the cat’s behavior changes – she becomes more affectionate, seeks attention, and makes melodic sounds. However, sometimes she may prefer solitude, listening to the changes within her body.

If the cat is active and has a good appetite, there is no need to worry about frequent vet visits. However, it’s wise to have contact information for nearby veterinary clinics in case the cat needs assistance during labor. Typically, a cat gives birth to 3 to 7 kittens.

Burmese cats make excellent mothers. They take care of their kittens, keep the nest clean, and stay close to the babies in the early days. During this period, it’s helpful to place water and food bowls closer to the mother cat.

If the cat is lethargic, doesn’t groom herself or the kittens, or is overly anxious, it’s a sign to consult a vet.

It’s best not to disturb the kittens initially. Their fur doesn’t need special care, but if a kitten gets very dirty, you can wipe it with a damp cloth. Moisten the cloth in warm water and gently clean off the dirt.

According to the rules of the felinological community, Burmese kittens can be sold only after the litter has been checked for breed standard conformity, vaccinated, and dewormed.
