Breed Description
The progenitor of American Burmese cats was a brown female named Wong Mau from America. She was mated with a Siamese cat, and subsequent backcrossing established the breed.
Initially, the Burmese had only a brown coat and resembled Siamese cats in appearance. Over time, another variety, the European Burmese, emerged, and the range of colors expanded.
The modern standard for American Burmese includes the following characteristics:
- Sturdy body with well-defined muscles.
- Well-developed chest.
- Round face with a prominent forehead.
- Expressive, widely spaced round eyes (yellow or green).
- Slightly forward-tilting rounded ears.
- Proportionate, neat limbs.
American Burmese Coat Colors
Much is said about the charming temperament of American Burmese cats. However, the breed is also loved for its striking coat colors.
American Burmese cats have soft, dense fur that shines attractively without spots or stripes. The following uniform colors are accepted:
- Brown: Referred to as black in the EMS code, but due to a specific lightening gene, the body is dark brown. Only the nose tip and paw pads are close to black. Another name for this color is sable, resembling espresso with a glossy sheen that shines brightly in sunlight.
- Blue: Comparable to the Siamese blue-point color. The body is bluish-gray with a noticeable tin sheen. The belly and paws are one or two shades lighter. The nose tip is blue, and the paw pads have a pinkish tint. Very dark shades approaching gray are undesirable.
- Chocolate: Unlike sable, chocolate Burmese resemble a “cappuccino” shade, with darker nose tips and paw pads. The caramel tone is particularly valued, created by the lightening gene. This often leads to confusion between chocolate and sable Burmese among cat enthusiasts.
- Lilac: Appears pale silver with a pleasant pinkish hue. The face and ears are darker but without a sharp contrast. The paw pads and nose tip are lavender.
- Red: The ears, face, and tail are bright orange, while the body is creamy.
- Cream: The main pastel shade with gentle cream-colored face, ears, and paw pads. Kittens may have faint stripes on their legs that disappear as they mature.
You can also find tortoiseshell colors: sable, lilac, chocolate, and blue. These are unique to American Burmese. They can be described as the primary color with evenly distributed cream speckles.
In New Zealand, Australia, Germany, and France, additional shades such as cinnamon, caramel, fawn, and apricot are recognized.
